Inspectorate Division, Mincom

LEGAL FRAMEWORK

The Mines Department was first established in 1902 at Tarkwa. It derived its mandate from enactments made over the period until 1986 when these enactments were replaced in some cases by the Minerals and Mining Law, PNDCL 153. Under these arrangements, the Chief Inspector of Mines was appointed by the Sector Minister in consultation with the Minerals Commission. The new Minerals and Mining Act of 2006, Act 703, transformed the Mines Department into the Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission

MISSION STATEMENT

The Inspectorate Division of the Minerals Commission exists to enforce compliance with laws, regulations and standards, by permitting procedures, inspections and enquiries, with the aim to reduce accidents, dangers, disturbing effects and nuisances caused by mining activities to an acceptable level. Furthermore, the Inspectorate Division provides other needed sector services.
