The Department currently employs 49 officers. The Head Office which also serves as a Regional office is located in the capital, Accra. There are 4 other regional offices called inspectorate at Takoradi, Kumasi, Tarkwa and Takrowase.
The Department is headed by the Chief Inspector of Mines and assisted by a Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines.
The structure of the Inspectorate Division is as follows:
INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK
The Head office of the Mines Department/ Inspectorate Division was transferred from Takoradi to Accra in the late 1995.
The Accra inspectorate is responsible for the inspections of all Mines quarries, prospecting, sand and gravel pits and salt mining in the Greater Accra Region, Volta Region, and parts of Central and Eastern Regions.
The Takoradi and Tarkwa Inspectorates are together responsible for the inspections of all the gold mines at Tarkwa, Prestea, Abosso, AngloGold Ashanti (Iduaprim Mine), Sankofa, Bogosu, Manganese Mine at Nsuta and all quarries, prospecting operations, clay, diamond, sand and gravel pits in the Western Region, and the testing of Air receivers/pressure vessels and lifting gears.
In the Takoradi office, there is a mechanical laboratory which is equipped with modern equipment for the Non-destructive testing of winding ropes. The chemical and the Environmental monitoring laboratories are currently being equipped to make it fully functional.
The Kumasi Inspectorate is responsible for the inspections of the following:
• AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi)
• AngloGold Ashanti (Bibiani)
• Bonte Gold Mines - liquidated
• Resolute Amansie Resources closed
• Ghana Bauxite Company Limited, Awaso
• Newmont Ghana Limited, Brong Ahafo
• All quarries, prospecting operations, sand and gravel pits in the Ashanti region.
The Takrowase Inspectorate is responsible for the inspections of the following:
• Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Limited, Akwatia.
• All small-scale diamond mines in the Eastern Region.
• All quarries, prospecting operations, sand and gravel pits in the Eastern Region
